Backyard Makeovers Don't Have to Cost a Fortune

by Francine Huff, All About Lawns Columnist

It's the year of the "staycation" as many people are finding it can be just as fun--and definitely cheaper--to stay home instead of taking budget-busting vacations. A recent TripAdvisor survey found that 50 percent of Americans planned to stick closer to home this vacation season due to high prices for fuel and food, among other things. Why not take more time to enjoy the old homestead by giving your backyard an affordable makeover?

On the Cheap

Your backyard makeover doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. Sure, you could spend thousands of dollars making numerous improvements, but we're just talking about sprucing up the yard for more enjoyment. Decide on a realistic budget and stick to it. Try these things to quickly and economically spruce up your space.

Lawn Maintenance

Cutting the grass and pulling weeds is a no-brainer. No one wants to sit in a weed patch, and regular lawn maintenance can help keep your grass lush and free of damaging insects. Plus, a freshly mowed lawn is a must for all those backyard games like badminton, volleyball, croquet or horseshoes that allow you spend quality time with family and friends. Use some of the money you would have spent traveling to purchase a variety of backyard games.

Backyard Patio Design

Clean up your patio and make it move inviting. Replace weatherworn furniture or give it some flavor with paint or stain and some colorful new cushions. Use a power washer to clean stone, cement, or wood. Make sure wood decks are completely dry before staining. Flowers, plants, a grill, a small fountain, or an outdoor stove can really dress up your backyard patio design.

By paying attention to the little details--a new stain on the deck or adding new plants--you can give your backyard area new life, providing enjoyment for the entire family.
