Backyard Ponds: Plants and Figurines
If you have figurines or containers in your backyard pond you should remove them and wash them with a solution containing bleach and water. If your backyard design called for plants in the pond, you should remove them from the water. Underwater plants can be pulled up and you can save the shoots to plant in the spring. If you have lotus or water lily you can wrap them in wet newspapers and store them in your garage until warm weather returns, but make sure they don't freeze over the winter. Plants that can survive the cold can be replanted in the pond after you clean it.

Backyard Ponds Needs Thorough Cleaning
Drain all but about a foot of the water to clean your backyard pond. You can use a pump or reverse siphon suction on your garden hose. Scrape out all the muck at the bottom. This can be especially important if you have fish in your pond. Just make sure you don't puncture the liner.

Your fish can stay in the pond as long as there are at least 2 feet of water. Treating the water with fish conditioning crystals can help them survive the cold months. You can use a water heater or de-icer to keep a spot free of ice for them.

While creating a backyard design with a pond can be fun, don't forget that maintaining your water feature is as important as taking care of other features in your backyard.
