Backyard Sheds Can Help Organize Clutter

by Francine Huff, All About Lawns Columnist

Are you running out of storage space in your garage? If so, it may be time to build a backyard shed to organize all those tools, backyard games, and patio furniture that's cluttering up your garage.

What Size Do Your Need?

You typically do not need a lot a lot of space for a backyard shed. But it is traditionally important to decide what your storage needs are before purchasing an outdoor building. When measuring your space, take into consideration any local ordinances or homeowners association rules pertaining to erecting backyard sheds. There may be restrictions on how close it can be erected to your property line or house. Depending upon the size you also may need a permit.

Backyard Shed Options: Choose Your Materials

A relatively affordable option is a basic garden shed with wood framing, siding, and a floor. Vinyl and metal sheds are also popular and may last longer than wooden structures. However, wood sheds are often more decorative and can be made to resemble a home. Sheds can be customized with things like decorative windows, skylights, shelving, or workbenches.

Backyard Games and Hobbies

Backyard sheds aren't just for storing tools. An outdoor building can be used as a children's playhouse, workshop, or craft space. A shed can even be outfitted as a place to just get away and relax.

There are a host of companies that sell ready-to-assemble kits. But if you're ambitious enough to build your own shed you can find plans and instructions in books, magazines, and online.
