Keep Your Lawn Healthy
First and foremost, you'll want to make sure your lawn is green and healthy when the big day arrives. If your lawn isn't in the best shape, fall is a good time to plant grass seed and fertilize. Advantages to planting in the fall are that:

  • The soil will still be warm
  • Daytime temperatures generally shouldn't be too hot
  • You shouldn't have a lot of weeds.

Backyard Landscaping Should Be Planned
If you plan out your backyard landscaping carefully you shouldn't need to invest a lot of money in expensive flowers from a florist. Look at the theme colors for the bridal party and choose flowers and plants that will compliment those colors. Choose plants that should be in full bloom on the wedding day and plant them at the appropriate time. A fall backyard wedding can use the changing leaves as part of the theme. Decide ahead of time where the couple will stand, where the guests will sit, where the cake and food will be set up, etc., and plan your backyard landscaping accordingly.

Your backyard makeover can incorporate a fountain, a small pond, trellises, canopies, or other special touches to jazz up the scenery. Decide ahead of time where you'd like to take pictures so you'll be ready for those once-in-a-lifetime shots.
