Backyard Living Spaces
Even a small backyard can have separate living spaces. Decide how many living spaces you need, such as a play area for children, a water feature, or garden. Make one area a sitting space with a table and chairs. You can use a patio, deck, or grassy area for this purpose. Think about the type of furniture you want and how many people you want to be able to fit comfortably in this area. There's nothing worse than going to a cookout where everyone is standing around awkwardly because there isn't enough room to sit or even stand.

You traditionally want to avoid a cluttered luck in your small backyard. But you can creatively use plants, fountains, rocks, and other features to separate your backyard living spaces. Having separate areas that are slightly concealed by plants from one another can give the illusion that your backyard is much larger than it is.

Minimal Lawn Care
With a small backyard you can come up with a design that can keep lawn care from taking up all your time. If you want a green lawn you can plant a small area of grass that requires little maintenance. Your small backyard design can also cut down on lawn care by including more plants, rocks, and trees. Draw out your design so you can determine where to place any pathways, fencing, or hedges.

By combining a touch of creativity with a well-designed plan, you can create a backyard area that's enjoyable all season long.
