The goats could do some trimming, but the result maybe not as neat as that of a real lawn mower. It is cost effective, though.

I have used goats and sheep for years on the 10 acres of grass/weeds that sit beside my house. They are the best and I am lucky as there is a farm nearby that owns the animals. The owner of the herd doesn't charge me because the animals can walk on over and get free food for a week!

Excellent point, Roger. Obviously the goats have their positives and negatives - whether extra "fertilizer" is on the pro or con side depends on your perspective, I suppose. :) Thanks for your comments!

The cost-effectiveness truly depends on each inidividual homeowner's situation. Obviously everyone needs to cross the "t's" and dot the "i's" before moving ahead with buying goats or a tractor-sized mower for their large property. You're right about fertilization (see the other related comment!) for sure. I just enjoy uncovering alternative solutions to normal home and garden activities!

I never knew this was an option until we took a foray into the country. I wondered who would ever have goats as pets. But they are great at keeping the grass short and well-fertilized. It's not as cost-effective as you might think, though. Goats eat a lot and they require vet care occasionally.

Fainting goats would be a great animal to have, they would casually graze, and you could get a lot of entertainment out of them. But I think I would rather do maintenance on my lawn mower than...clean up after a large herd of goats. :)
