If you want to collect a lot of rain water, you can bury a large agricultural tank(usually the size of a septic 1000-3000 gallons)
Store the water underground, and use a shallow water pump on a timer to irrigate.

It sounds really great. I wonder if it retains heat. The recycled padding around kids playgrounds gets really hot! Let us know how it goes!

here in Long beach you can report water wasters to the Water Department. Check with your local department and see if they have a program for that. Thanks for reading! Check back every week (I usually post some time on Tuesday).

I always shake my head when I see sprinklers watering the asphalt...especially when they stay that way the entire season. Should be some sort of fine for doing that, I know some HOA won't put up with that. I also get peeved when I see houses water too many times a week, especially not on their designated watering days!

There is a new permeable patio flooring material that is made from old tires and recycled gallon jugs. the material encourages absorption and discourages run off. The material is about 30 percent more than brick, but well worth it if you're going 'green'.
