You’ll want to use something called starter fertilizer. You’ll see tons of options at any garden supply store. Starter fertilizer has a different balance of nutrients than your average fertilizer, more phosphorous and potassium to help the new grass’s roots develop. For new seeds, a special seed mulch is also a good idea. It protects the seeds from the elements and biodegrades just in time with the growing lawn (easier than straw, which can carry weed seeds and which you have to worry about picking up). The other thing with new seeds is water – keeping them moist at all times is essential since they’re likely to die if they dry out, even for a short period. Getting the watering right can be kind of a pain/a labor of love since you don’t want to flood them either. So basically you just have to set your sprinklers well or be out there turning on the water every couple of hours.
Hope that helps some!
