Unless you just relish the time and expense required to keep your lawn green throughout the year, you can choose attractive turfs that are fairly maintenance free. In an effort to reduce work load without sacrificing aesthetics, here's a list of durable grass types that can make your lawn beautiful throughout the year. What Makes a Durable Lawn?
It's difficult to choose durable grass types for your lawn without knowing exactly what durable turf is. With advancements in high-tech horticulture, there are several grass strains that typically perform well under pressure. By durable, we mean:
- How well do potential grass types handle extreme sun and drought?
- How do they manage flooding and intense moisture?
- How much mowing and fertilizing do they demand?
- How do they respond to heavy foot and automobile traffic?
Grass Types that Fit the Bill
Of course, geographic locale and regional climates dictate what grasses you should be considering for your lawn. But most areas have two or three different grass types that grow well. Here's a short list of durable lawn turfs that have proven to be both tough and attractive.
- Bermuda. Considered the grass of the South. A perennial grass that grows in tropical, sub-tropical and the transition zones.
- Bluegrass. This cool season, perennial ground cover forms a beautiful, high quality, dense sod when grown in pure strands.
- Zoysia. Warm season grasses native to the temperate locales of Asia. A deep root system and salt tolerance are key benefits.
