Whether you're growing grass from scratch or trying to renovate your lawn, it's important to look at the characteristics of different types of grass to find the one that's right for your backyard. Here are some things to consider when choosing the best grass seed to use on your lawn.

Is There a Lot of Sunlight in Your Backyard?

Look at how much of your lawn will be in the shade. Most grasses need at least four hours of direct sunlight each day. If you have a lot of shady areas, a fescue grass may be the best choice. Fescues typically do well in cooler climates and can stay green throughout the year. Fescue grasses also tolerate droughts better than some other types of grass.

How Much Time Do You Have for Lawn Maintenance?

You may dream of having a lush lawn, but some types of grass require more maintenance. Kentucky bluegrass looks really pretty, but you may have to spend more time fertilizing it and keeping it free of pests. But once it starts to grow it usually spreads well, and if it gets damaged it will cover over bare spots quicker than some other types of grass.

How Much Traffic Does Your Lawn Get?

If your backyard lawn is a hub of activity, you may want to choose a grass that can stand up to lots of wear and tear. Try perennial ryegrass or Kentucky bluegrass. Keep in mind that many bags of grass seed contain several species mixed together. So make sure you find out which types of grass are included before making a purchase.

By choosing the best grass seed for your backyard and spending time cultivating and maintaining your lawn, you can create an attractive, yet functionally backyard area.
