Which Type Of Grass Is The Easiest to Care For?

Everyone wants to know what grass type requires the least maintenance, and the results depend greatly on region. Here is a list of what some argue are the easiest types of grass to grow.

Grass for Rocky Mountain and Plains States

Though it may have gotten a bad rap in years past, many turf breeders argue that Kentucky bluegrass is the way to go. Some of the best varieties for minimum maintenance are 'Belmont', 'Caliber', 'Colbalt', 'Monopoly', and 'Unique'.

Grass for the Northeast and Midwest

Hard fescue is good here. Like other fine fescues, this grass has wiry, needle-like blades, but it grows slowly and has a mature height of only 6 inches. Some summers, you may only mow your lawn twice. If you get lots of shade and moisture, another lawn grass for northern regions is Poa supina or 'Supernova', a perennial relative of annual bluegrass.

Grass for the Southeast

Southerners don't call centipede grass the lazy man's grass for nothing. This light-green grass grows slowly and requires less mowing and fertilizing than most other warm-season grasses.

Grass for the Southwest

Turf grasses have a tough time in Southern California, so researchers have been looking for alternatives, primarily by playing around with Zoysia grass. Regular Zoysia becomes brown from October to March, but the oldest improved Zoysia, 'Emerald', is still a good, available choice. Inland, Bermuda grass is hard to beat.

Grass for the Northwest

In most areas, bent grasses are considered high-maintenance. But some types, especially colonial bent grass, are well adapted to the Northwest's climate. Velvet bent grass is a low-maintenance species for cool areas, but its breeding has lagged in recent years and may be hard to find.
