Very Important Lawn Care Order

by Dawn West, All About Lawns Columnist

Get the order of your lawn treatments wrong, and you can wind up with problems. So which is it--seed first then kill weeds or kill weeds then seed? Fertilize then seed or seed then fertilize? If you've ever been boggled wondering about the right order for your lawn care, here's the low down.

While you can take care of some lawn care jobs anytime, others can create real problems if you do them out of turn. Here are a few timing pointers.

Tip #1: Apply Herbicide Well After Seeding.

If you've just put in a new lawn, wait at least a month, or until you've mowed your lawn two or three times, before applying herbicide of any type. Before that, your new lawn is too tender to handle the chemicals. If you want to take care of weeds before putting in your new lawn, go ahead and spray, but make sure to wait at least a week before seeding.

Tip #2: Fertilize Before and After Seeding.

New lawns need special starter fertilizers, higher in phosphorous and lower in nitrogen than the typical fertilizer. Applying it before you seed is a great way to make sure the nutrients work their way into the soil and are ready to nourish your lawn.

Tip #4: Take Care of the Soil Before Putting Down Grass.

Before you seed or sod, you have easy access to the soil. After you seed or sod, not so much. So if your yard is bumpy, uneven, rocky, sandy, etc., do everything you can to deal with the problems before you put grass in.

With the right lawn care order, you can enjoy great green grass all season long.
