There is nothing like the satisfaction that comes with building your own recreation area in your back yard.

One of the biggest problems most homeowners with children face is the lack of play space in their yards. But with some simple planning and a few hundred dollars' worth of materials, you can make an exciting recreation area in your own yard. Let's take a look at what is involved.
How would you like to improve your lawn?
  • Make it greener
  • Eliminate patches
  • Less weeds
  • Make it thicker

Materials for Your Recreation Area:

  • Shovel. You will use a shovel to dig out the area for your recreation area. Dig about a half inch into the ground and remove all of the grass and weeds in the area.
  • Plastic Sheet. You will need a plastic sheet the length and width of your recreation area to lay down in order to prevent harmful weeds from returning.
  • Gravel or Wood Chips. Put down a layer of gravel or wood chips to complete the foundation of your recreation area and give it a cleaner look.

Once you have gathered the necessary materials, it's time to choose the items you will include in your recreation area. Take into consideration the age-appropriateness of the items, as well as the space you have to work with.

Contents of Your Recreation Area:

  • Swing Set. You can find swing sets at your local home improvement center or through newspaper classified ads.
  • Slide. A slide is another popular addition to any recreation area.
  • Sports Materials. Putting up a basketball or soccer goal is inexpensive and can be a great way to introduce your kids to sports.

Regardless of the type of recreation area you decide on, creating a recreation area can provide your kids with hours of backyard entertainment.
