Front Yard Landscaping with Portable Flower Boxes

Flower boxes are available in all shapes and sizes--if you are handy you can even build your own. Because they are portable, you can adjust your front yard landscaping from month to month, and from year to year.

Planting annual flowers gives you the option of changing your color schemes each year. Annual flowers can be grown from seed, or purchased as seedlings at your local garden center. The University of Illinois has an index of the many varieties of annual flowers, their characteristics, and their health needs.

Before planting your flower boxes and making them a part of your front yard landscaping, consider the following:

  • Sunshine: Most annuals like sunlight, but a few varieties prefer shade. Choose your annual flowers based on where you plan to place the flower box.
  • Soil: Fill your flower boxes with a mixture of organic material and potting soil, with some fertilizer mixed in. Mix your own soil, or purchase it pre-mixed.
  • Drainage: Make sure your flower boxes have holes drilled around the base to allow for excess water drainage.
  • Temperature: Place your flower boxes out only after the threat of frost has passed.

Start planning your flower boxes and how they can complement your home and front yard landscaping. This summer, the rainbow of colors in your flower boxes could be a pleasant sight for many passing motorists.
