Lawn Care Maintenance: Make the Right Decision

1. Decide what services you need and get estimates from several lawn care companies so you can compare apples to apples.

2. Think about your expectations for your lawn. If you want a perfectly manicured and green lawn you may need a company that can do more than mow and fertilize it. You may need services that include pest control, dethatching, seeding and core aeration.

3. Put together a list of companies that offer the services you need. Get referrals from friends and family. Don't assume that just because you see a lawn care company working in your neighborhood that they do a good job.

4. Have a representative of the lawn maintenance company visit your home to give you an evaluation and written estimate of services.

5. Ask whether the lawn care company offers individualized programs or treats all lawns the same.

6. Find out whether you can get a lawn maintenance program that offers reduced use of fertilizers and pesticides.

7. Ask when fertilizer will be applied and how application rates are determined.

8. Get guidelines to help if you may be doing some of the maintenance yourself.

9. Find out how long the company has been in business and if they are registered in your state to apply pesticides

10. Get documentation that the company is insured.

Make sure you have a written contract from the lawn care company you hire. It should detail the services you will receive, as well as a payment schedule.
