Getting Great Yard Design Ideas

by Dawn West, All About Lawns Columnist

A lush lawn is the heart of a great yard, but putting in landscaping above and beyond lovely green grass can make a nice yard into a spectacular one. Knowing just what to do when it comes to landscaping design, however, can be a challenge. Plenty of folks turn to professional landscape designers as a result. If you wouldn't mind saving a few bucks though, you can seek out inspiration and come up with great landscaping ideas all on your own.

To move your yard from ho-hum to amazing, landscaping beyond just grass is the answer. Not all sources of inspiration for landscaping ideas are created equal though. Here are some of the top places to look for ideas to get you going.

Tip #1. Magazines are your friends.

When it comes to landscaping design inspiration, you're going to want pictures. While some gardening magazines may be full of daunting photos of backyard paradises, you can pick and choose landscaping elements that strike your fancy, even if you're not going to devote your life to tending to your yard. Once you've found something you like, you can tear out magazine pages and take them with you to a nursery or garden center to pick out specific plants, edging materials, etc.

Tip #2. Garden supply stores and nurseries can help.

Many nurseries and garden supply stores can help you come up with landscaping ideas not just by showing you plants, but by actually helping you draw up landscaping design plans. This can be especially helpful if you'll be landscaping in stages (which can be easier on the budget) and want to see where you're headed. Check with your local nursery or garden supply store to find out if they offer this service.

Tip #3. Nothing beats real life.

Head out to the nearest botanic gardens or arboretum. Go on a nice long Sunday afternoon drive and check out yards. Once you're looking with an eye for landscaping ideas for your own yard, you'll be amazed at how landscaping design jumps out at you.
