Sod Grass Equals Instant Lawn

by Kelly Richardson All About Lawns Columnist

Attention, homeowners! You don't have to spend tireless working hours and hundreds of dollars in maintenance costs to have the perfect lawn. Sod grass is the perfect alternative for those who just can't wait for the summer sun to do its work.

Sod grass is a pre-grown lawn material that is delivered to you in stacks and simply rolled onto your lawn. New homes often get a load of sod grass to start a lawn instantly. But even if your home isn't new, you can enjoy the benefits of sod grass immediately. Sod is easy to care for, durable, and can provide you with an agreeable surface to enjoy.

Sod Grass Types

  • Ryeblue. A combination of 80% pureblue and 20% perennial rye, ryeblue sod grass features a slightly lighter greenish color and an overall glossier appearance than standard grown grass.
  • Dichondria. This sod features distinctive, round-leaved texture and a low- growing ground cover. Use for partial shade or wherever mowing is difficult.
  • Zoysia Tenuifolia. This is a popular ornamental grass with a unique, rolling appearance that is perfect in oriental garden settings or as ground cover. Zoysia sod is dormant in winter.

The best part about laying sod grass is the ease in which it is cared for. Ample watering and infrequent mowing are two ways you can work towards a healthier turf.

Caring for Sod Grass

  • Watering. Three times per day for two weeks, then cut back to two times per day.
  • Mowing. Cut at two to three inches in height every third week for maximum growth and development.

Sod grass is literally a yard in a box. With the proper installation and care, you'll be amazed at the performance of this wildly popular turf material.
