The Basics of Plant Watering Indoors

by Shannon Lee, All About Lawns Columnist

Many outdoor plants are hardy enough to need only the occasional watering when Mother Nature hasn't taken care of the rain situation in a few days. But indoor plants don't have the luxury of a deluge from the skies. They depend upon you and your green thumb for proper plant watering.

Tips for Indoor Plant Watering

Not sure if you're doing right by your indoor plants? These watering tips can help:

  • Remember that clay pots draw moisture from the soil, so their plants might need a bit of extra watering. Enameled pots and those without drainage holes need much less water.
  • No drainage holes? Use a handful of small rocks or marbles to create a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot. This keeps water away from the roots and allows it to be reabsorbed slowly.
  • Know your plants! Some plants thrive in wet conditions, while others need much less water to stay healthy and grow strong. Never assume all plants in your home need the same amount of watering.
  • If you are using a soil mixture that includes peat, take care to never let it dry out. Peat is notoriously difficult to rehydrate.
  • Plants in dry rooms, direct sunlight, and small pots usually need more frequent watering than others. Plants in humid areas or plastic pots need less frequent watering.
  • Still not sure how much plant watering needs to be done? Invest in small moisture meters. These inexpensive devices, found at most nurseries, show you with a simple glance exactly how much watering your plants need.

Indoor plants add beauty and ambiance to your home. Take good care of them with proper watering.
