Everyone wants to give their lawn the life-giving properties of a good soaking without contributing to an unneeded strain on the water supply. Here are some sensible tips for making the most of your lawn irrigation schedule this year.

This is the time of year when our thoughts turn to the development of our lawns. And nothing is more crucial to that development than a thoughtful lawn irrigation schedule. As most homeowners know, it's very easy to over or underwater a lawn. Without careful planning and the right equipment, you can undo the hours it took to seed and fertilize. Here's what you should know about lawn irrigation.

Lawn Irrigation Methods

  • Automatic. A lawn irrigation system can be programmed to your exact specifications, bringing water in from a natural source to soak the soil.
  • Manual. Using sprinklers is still a great way to get the job done. Careful placement and rotation is the key to a successful manual irrigation.

No matter which way you intend to water this year, the basic irrigation principles are the same. Taking careful consideration of your regional climate, including average daily rainfall, will assist you in watering sensibly.

Irrigation Basics

  • Know Your Soil. For example, sandy soils should be watered more frequently.
  • Be Liberal. Saturate the soil to at least 6 inches per irrigation session.
  • Cycling. Water and wait an hour to allow any runoff to complete before continuing.

Beautiful spring lawns are made or broken during the irrigation phase. Check with your local home and garden professional for additional lawn irrigation tips for your particular locale.
