Make Lawn Watering Easier with a Lawn Sprinkler

by Shannon Lee, All About Lawns Columnist

Lawn Sprinkler Options

There are three general options for lawn sprinklers:

  • Spray sprinklers are just what they sound like--they spray a continuous arc of water over an area you select. They are great for small spaces.
  • Rotor heads provide a more uniform dose of water and are great for large lawns.
  • Drip sprinklers let water seep directly into the ground, effectively hiding the sprinkler while still doing a good job of delivering water.

No matter which option you choose, remember the basics of watering your lawn: How often, and how much.

Lawn Watering: How Often?

A healthy lawn should have about one inch of water every day. Pay attention to the amount of rainfall you get on a daily basis, and remember not to water your lawn on those days. Too much water can be just as damaging as too little!

If you aren't sure how much water your sprinklers are supplying to your grass, set a shallow pan on the lawn and collect water in it. If it's more than an inch, you're watering too much.

When Should You Run Lawn Sprinklers?

If you run your lawn sprinklers in the middle of the day, the heat of the sun causes the water to evaporate quickly. Your lawn is better served by watering at night. Time your lawn sprinkler to run between two and four in the morning for optimum watering efficiency.
