Buying the Right Lawn Mower for your Lawn

by Kelly Richardson, All About Lawns Columnist

Let's face it. Half of the fun of keeping a beautiful lawn is getting to cut it! Right? You bet. The lawn mower is a complex machine with many options that must be considered before turning it loose on your yard. Let's talk about some.

The key to keeping your lawn lush and beautiful is choosing the right lawn mower for the job. There are many factors to consider when choosing the lawn mower that best suits your type of lawn. You should keep in mind the physical characteristics of your lawn as well as the variety of options available from which to choose. A lawn mower with a catcher or without? A push mower or a riding mower? Let's take a look at the basics.

The Physical Characteristics of Your Lawn

  • Grass Density. The general thickness of your lawn will determine the type of blade size and rotation that you will need. Sometimes it is better to trade mower width for blade speed.
  • Yard Size. This characteristic will dictate the general size of the lawn mower you choose. If your yard is big enough, you might want to consider a riding mower.
  • To Catch or Not to Catch. There are two ways you can go here. If you want to catch your clippings, choose a lawn mower with a rear-mounting catcher. If not, a simple thatching mower will be your best bet. The thatching mower will grind up your lawn clippings into a fine, fertile covering for your lawn.

A Push Mower versus a Riding Mower

A riding mower is the Cadillac of the lawn mower. Built for comfort and productivity, the riding mower is also the most expensive. You should consider the size of your lawn to determine whether or not a riding mower is the right choice for you.
