Go Cordless this Year with Your Lawn Care Equipment

by Jeffrey Anderson, All About Lawns Columnist

Cordless power tool technology has advanced rapidly during the last decade. When cordless tools first came on the scene many years ago, they lacked in power and battery life. Thankfully, those days are long gone. On construction sites it is often difficult to find any workers using tools with cords, and these are people who earn their living with their tools.

The same technology that has made cordless construction tools popular is now available in lawn care equipment. This summer, all you have to do is push in a battery and you are ready to get started.

Cordless Lawn Care Equipment

Cordless lawn care equipment offers many advantages. You no longer have to drag an extension cord around your yard, and you are not limited as to how far you can work from an electrical outlet. Cordless lawn care equipment doesn't require running to the service station for gasoline or oil--all you need is a battery charger.

Cordless tool technology was originally developed for the moon landings. Astronauts needed a tool that would be able to dig in the moon's surface for samples. These articles by NASA and the Shippensburg University Department of Physics go into greater detail on this technology, and how we now use it in everyday life.

Today's cordless batteries hold their charge longer than ever, and some can be recharged up to 500 times. They are available in powerful 18 and 24 volts, which are usually enough for just about any yard work. The selection of cordless lawn care equipment expands each year. Popular cordless tools include:

  • Chain saw
  • Hedge trimmer
  • Gas trimmer
  • Grass shears
  • Hard service sweeper

There are even cordless cultivators available for backyard gardens. You may not have to dig for moon rocks, but cordless lawn equipment can make your life a lot easier this summer.
