Cordless Lawn Mowers: Pros and Cons

by Marcia Passos Duffy, All About Lawns Columnist

Is it time to give up your noisy, smelly gas-powered lawn mower?

A recent EPA report concludes that one hour spent mowing your lawn with a gas mower emits as much air pollution as driving a car 20 miles, so now may be the time to consider going electric with a cordless lawn mower.

Cordless lawn mowers are cleaner and greener than their gas-powered kin. They can save you money in both gas and maintenance expenses.

Advantages of a Cordless Lawn Mower

  • Quieter. The sounds of a cordless lawn mower versus a gas-powered mower is like running a washing machine versus standing next to a motorcycle.
  • Cheaper/cleaner. Cordless mowers require no gas, oil, or spark plugs. A conventional mower might use up to $30 to $40 in gasoline and oil; the cost of running a cordless lawn mower is about $5 per year and has no emissions. The battery needs a replacement every five years.
  • Quality. These mowers cut grass just as well as gas-powered counterparts.

Factors to Consider Before Choosing a Cordless Lawn Mower

There are a few considerations to keep in mind before choosing a battery-powered lawn mower:

  • Small yards only. Cordless models work best on lawns that are flat and small (smaller than 8,000 square feet) because of battery run time. A 24-volt mower can cut up to 1/3 of an acre, or run up to 1.5 hours.
  • Recharging time. Charging time takes about 10 to 20 hours per battery; however, some newer models with lithium-ion batteries take a fraction of that time to recharge.
  • Heavy to push. These mowers are not self-propelled, which does save battery life, but can be strenuous if you are not accustomed to this type of workout.
