Five Tips for Choosing a Lawn Mower

When faced with rows of lawn mowers ranging from eco and exercise friendly push mowers to ergonomically correct riding mowers, it's easy to become confused. Here are some tips for choosing a lawn mower that's right for the job, your budget, and you.

Consider your yard size. Saving gas is great, but push mowers aren't likely to work when you have acres to mow. On the other hand, a tiny back yard (and your neighbors) probably won't benefit from a mondo model tractor mower

Don't forget the blades! When buying a lawn mower, it's important to understand how to adjust and maintain the cutting blades. Sharp blades, adjusted to the cutting height appropriate for your lawn, are essential. Dull blades damage grass.

Look for extras. Lawn mowers can multi task by mulching cuttings and redistributing them on your lawn. Of course, most mowers include a mechanism for collecting the cuttings if you prefer to dispose of them.

Ask for recommendations. Neighbors and friends whose lawns you admire may provide good information about the mowers they use.

Consider ease, exercise, and environment. Considering your priorities can help you select a lawn mower that cuts the grass and provides convenience, exercise, and minimal environmental impact. If you don't want to mow with a manual reel mower, an electric push mower may be more economical than a gas-powered mower

Once you've chosen a mower, you can prolong its life by having it professionally serviced once a year and keeping it clean and dry. Clearing debris and other objects from the lawn before mowing can save your mower (and wallet) from undue damage. Lawn mowers are designed to work hard, and should last for years if well cared for.
