Confessions of a Chronic Weed Trimmer

by Kelly Richardson, All About Lawns Columnist

Before we begin, you should know how I feel about weeds. They're the bane of my existence. They choke out my lawn, infest my garden, and grow along the edges of my entire yard. But armed with my automatic and manual weed trimmers, I have more than enough firepower to drive them away.

Throughout the years, there have been technological advancements in the weed trimmer industry that have made keeping a clean lawn and garden a lot easier. After all, who has time to crawl around on hands and knees and pull weeds all day? The automatic weed trimmer is the highest machine in the landscaping evolutionary chain. It allows you to save time and energy by increasing your ability to chew weeds up wherever they might be.

Weed Trimmer Specs

  • Horsepower. The latest weed trimmers feature a 20 CC, eco-friendly motor that runs quick and silent. With an easy pull starter and low emissions, the horsepower of the more advanced weed trimmers top some lawn mowers.
  • Whip Reach. The most common length of a weed trimmer cord is 15". You'll find that this is wide enough to handle the base of even the largest weed groups. You can get various sizes to fit your landscaping requirements.
  • Electrical. If the thought of handling messy gas cans is enough to turn you off, check out the line of electrical weed trimmers that run from an ordinary outlet. Rechargeable batteries are also available for some models.

Now I know that some homeowners out there are against all forms of mechanized landscaping tools. And for you folks, there is a wide selection of manual weed trimmers that stay true to the strict ideals of the environmentally friendly.

Manual Weed Trimmers

  • Sidewalk Edgers. A sidewalk edger creates clean lines along your driveway and street boundaries using a circular blade and effortless handle.
  • Pruners. Hand pruners are the original weed trimmer. Hand pruners are great for those hard to reach places that require patience and precision.

Stop hand pulling those weeds and invest in an automatic or manual trimmer. Your back will thank you and your weeds will hate you.
