Buying Ergonomically Correct Gardening Tools

by Allison Beatty, All About Lawns Columnist

Gardening is a physically challenging hobby, requiring plenty of bending, stooping and reaching. Before straining your body, consider the variety of gardening tools designed to keep you more comfortable in the yard.

Moving Around Your Yard

Most gardeners move around the yard frequently and at odd positions. The result is hurt muscles from stooping, bending and squatting. Among the gardening tools available to make yard work more enjoyable are:
  • Rolling carts to sit on while you plant flowers and weed the grass. Most have a seat with storage space inside.
  • A tool bucket that is large enough to hold the main gardening tools. Some have segmented areas for organizing gardening tools, such as grass clippers, pruners and weeders.

Gardening Hand Tools

There are many gardening tools that combine strength and sharpness with padded handles and contoured designs. LooL for the following equipment with soft gripping areas, cylindrical handles and ergonomically designed shapes:
  • Pruners (sturdy clippers)
  • Trowels (small spades)
  • Weeders (small, sharp rakes)
  • Loppers (branch cutters)

Watch Body Position with Yard Work

The way you move around the yard can have a big affect on how you feel the next day. To reduce strains try to:
  • Avoid reaching too far away from your body, move closer to the targeted area instead.
  • Lift with your arms legs and not your back.
  • Bend at the knees and hips when lifting.
  • Try raised flower beds to minimize stooping.
  • Avoid prolonged repetitive motions.

Gardening can be a rewarding hobby. Before planting, weeding and reseeding grass, however, invest in some comfortable gardening tools. This will help keep physical strain to a minimum.
