Tools for the Novice Gardener

Starting your first garden? Buy these must-have gardening tools before you start the serious work of weeding, planting, and pruning.

A Metal Rake.

While plastic and wood rakes have become increasingly popular, those made of metal are still more likely to last longer and maintain their shape.

Pruning Shears.

A good pair of pruning shears should allow you to cut back rose bushes, shrubs, and thin branches. They don't have to be the most expensive shears available to get the job done, but you probably shouldn't buy the cheapest pair on the market either.

Garden Hose.

Here's a gardening tool that can make your life as a gardener much easier. While every homeowner has a hose, not everyone has a hose that fits the size of their landscape. If you have a huge yard, make sure you buy a hose that's long enough for it. Likewise, don't buy a hose that's much too long for your yard - it will just get in the way. It's also important to buy a rack for your hose that allows you to easily roll it up when it's not in use. This will keep it from crimping and cracking.

Hose Attachment.

Buy an attachment for your hose that has many spray settings, including one that can mist your plants as well as drench them. An attachment can also make it easier to stop the flow of water temporarily without turning it off from the spicket.

Shovel.

This versatile tool doesn't need much explaining - a good shovel comes in handy for lots of gardening tasks. Make sure yours has a solid construction; you don't want the head snapping off the handle.

Other must-have items include wheelbarrows, sprayers, spreaders, hedge trimmers, and a comfortable pair of cotton gardening gloves. With these items you'll be well on your way to fitting out your garden shed with all the right tools.
